The event brought together committed activity owners and representatives of the official authorities from Malawi and Switzerland. Four activity owners presented their greenhouse gas mitigation activities to the invited guests. The displays of these activities, some of which are in implementation or close to implementation, was intended to showcase the high-quality of the projects being implemented in Malawi. Furthermore, the event drew the attention of the broader benefits of the Malawi-Switzerland cooperation, including its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the contribution to Malawi’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the support of sustainable economic growth. It also showcased the progress made under the bilateral agreement between the two countries towards the transfer and sale of the resulting emission reductions.

The purchase of the emission reductions, so called Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), by the Swiss Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offset (KliK Foundation), will make the mitigation activities financially viable and help unlock further investment in the country.

The launch event demonstrated that Malawi has positioned itself among the early movers in implementing cooperative climate action under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. It highlighted the strong commitment of the Government of Malawi and the private sector to pursue innovative climate solutions that deliver both emission reductions and tangible sustainable development benefits. The event also showcased the significant progress already achieved since the signing of the bilateral climate agreement with Switzerland in 2022, including the identification and development of high-quality mitigation activities that have the potential to attract further investment and contribute to Malawi’s green growth ambitions.

As implementation advances, the cooperation is expected to create new opportunities for investment, technology transfer, job creation, and sustainable economic development. The next major milestone will be the first transfer of mitigation outcomes and the issuance of ITMOs to Switzerland, marking a historic achievement for Malawi and demonstrating the country's leadership in translating the Paris Agreement into concrete climate action and lasting development benefits for its people.
