Side event on Article 6
In her introduction, Madeleine Diouf, Head of the Climate Change Division at the Senegalese Ministère de l’Environnement, du Développement durable et de la Transition écologique (MEDDTE), welcomed the panellists from different countries that are at an advanced stage in their commitment to climate action under Article 6 and emphasised the win-win solutions that can be achieved through cooperative approaches, as illustrated by the country representatives present from Senegal, Ghana, and Thailand as well as the UN Regional Collaboration Centres (RCCs).
The panel was then divided into two parts. First, the Head of RCCs introduced key needs and programmatic approaches identified by the RCCs in the different regions, and representatives from Senegal, Ghana, and Thailand presented their national strategies, governance frameworks and concrete work towards their 2030 emissions reduction targets. Switzerland provided an insight into the transition from negotiations to implementation and encouraged progressive work under Article 6. In the second part of the panel discussion, various parties from the private sector presented their engagement and experiences in developing and implementing climate protection programmes in host countries that signed bilateral agreements with Switzerland.
