Switzerland is using Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement to advance climate protection in collaboration with partner countries and to make it financially sustainable through carbon markets. Strict regulations apply in this so-called cooperative approach. Every proposed mitigation measure must be independently verified and subsequently authorised bilaterally. Three project owners who have successfully met these challenges are WAHU from Ghana, which aims to transform urban mobility with locally built e-bikes; Colbún from Chile, which aims to drive Chile’s energy transition with a 228-MW storage project; and Africa Climate Solutions, which is responsible for the Solar Rooftop 500 programme in Morocco.
Swiss climate protection projects run by the KliK Foundation have also always had to meet the strict requirements of the Federal Office for the Environment. The supported programme for heating networks has been particularly effective in this regard over the last 10 years. With a view to Horizon 2030, the application deadline has been set for the end of 2025 – even though the potential has not been fully exploited, as Jürg Liechti of programme operator Neosys AG explains in an interview.
