Since 2013, importers of fossil motor fuels have been obliged to offset part of the emissions caused by their products. Almost all fuel importers have commissioned the KliK Foundation to implement these legal requirements. Numerous supported programmes in the areas of transport, building, business and agriculture have already reduced CO₂ emissions by around 17 million tonnes. This is financed by a surcharge of up to 5 pence per litre of petrol or diesel at the pump.
Although the carbon offset mechanism is sometimes criticised as ‘indulgence trading’ or ‘greenwashing’, practice shows that it is an effective and robust tool of Swiss climate policy. We took the revision of the Swiss CO₂ Act, which came into force at the beginning of this year, as an opportunity to fundamentally revise our explanatory video.
