KliK Foundation | The carbon offset mechanism under the Swiss CO₂ Act is a central pillar of Swiss climate policy. About one-fifth of the greenhouse gas emission reductions achieved by the Act are generated by this tool. Given its importance, it is surprisingly little known to the general public and rarely features in political debates.
Almost all importers of fossil motor fuels, who have been required to participate in the compensation mechanism since 2013, have commissioned the KliK Foundation to achieve the emission reductions required by law on their behalf. We have now taken the revision of the Swiss CO₂ Act, which came into force at the beginning of this year, as an opportunity to redesign our explanatory video on the compensation mechanism. It clearly shows which players are involved and how the processes are designed, and explains why carbon offsetting has established itself as an effective and robust tool of Swiss climate policy.
At the international level, the KliK Foundation has taken decisive steps forward in recent months. Several authorisations for climate protection activities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement are imminent. Another significant milestone is that ITMOs (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes) have been issued for the first time for a climate protection project financed by the KliK Foundation in Africa, which can be counted towards Switzerland's national climate protection target. The KliK Foundation is thus making a concrete and measurable contribution to climate protection both locally and to the achievement of national climate targets.
Whether through innovative projects such as improved cook stoves in Ghana, constructive interactions at the West Africa Carbon Market Hub or official side events at international climate conferences, the KliK Foundation remains a driving force for effective carbon reducing at home and abroad.
Secure support for electric construction vehicles or electric agricultural loaders now
Since mid-June, new conditions have been in place for the promotion of new projects in the electric construction vehicles and electric agricultural loaders programmes. The following currently applies to registration for the KliK Foundation's supported programmes:
For new projects, only vehicles that will be put into operation by 31 December 2025 are eligible for funding.
In existing projects, new vehicles can still be registered without any time restrictions.
Electric construction vehicles and farm loaders are impressive
Are you thinking about purchasing an electric excavator or electric farm loader and need some inspiration? Electric machines are impressive both on a construction site in the middle of Zurich and on an agricultural operation in Thurgau:
Calculation of subsidies and login
If you would like to know how much subsidy you can expect for your planned vehicle, you can calculate this yourself using our contribution calculator. Don't hesitate to register your vehicle for one of the supported programmes! Registration is non-binding, free of charge and quick and easy.
Visit to the arabern
)
The Bern wastewater treatment plant (arabern) sees climate protection as part of its mission, alongside the fulfilment of its main task of treating wastewater from the catchment area. Those responsible are already implementing a number of climate protection measures, and new measures such as the reduction of nitrous oxide emissions are about to be launched. As a participant in the KliK Foundation's supported programme for reducing nitrous oxide emissions in wastewater treatment plants, arabern is receiving financial support for the construction of a plant that removes nitrous oxide from exhaust air using regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO). During our visit to the large plant near Herrenschwanden in Bern, construction work on the RTO plant was in full swing.
Supported programmes for WWTPs
Wastewater treatment plants account for around 1-3% of Switzerland's greenhouse gas emissions. They mainly emit nitrous oxide and methane. Various technically mature measures now exist that can significantly reduce these emissions. Most of the measures are not required by law and are financially unviable. To enable them to be implemented nonetheless, the KliK Foundation is financing two supported programmes for nitrous oxide reduction and methane reduction in WWTPs. Switzerland receives ITMOs from Africa for the first time
On 7 July, a significant milestone in international climate cooperation was announced: for the first time, Switzerland issued international certificates (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes, ITMOs) for emission reductions from a greenhouse gas mitigation activitiy in Africa. Switzerland can count the credits towards its national climate protection target. This is based on Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement and the bilateral climate agreement with Ghana, the partner state where the activity is being carried out.
)
The KliK Foundation is financing the mitigation activitiy through the acquisition of international certificates. Specifically, it is supporting the production and distribution of improved cookstoves for rural households in Ghana. The innovative technology reduces smoke and pollutant emissions in households by up to 80 per cent and cuts cooking fuel costs by up to 60 per cent.
The KliK Foundation at the West Africa Carbon Market Hub
)
The KliK Foundation's participation in the West Africa Carbon Market Hub 2025 in Senegal provided a valuable opportunity to present our ongoing activities on the ground. During his stay, a representative of the KliK Foundation held constructive discussions with cooperation partners and relevant players involved in the implementation of activities under Article 6.2 in Senegal.
The visit was rounded off with a networking event hosted by the Swiss Embassy in Senegal, which further promoted dialogue and future cooperation.
Official side event of the KliK Foundation and Chile at SB62
)
On 24 June, the Chilean Ministry of the Environment and the KliK Foundation jointly organised an official side event at this year's UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn (SB62). The event focused on the national framework conditions for carbon markets in countries participating in the Article 6 mechanism of the Paris Agreement. These framework conditions must be aligned with existing national climate policy tools in order to create a basis for effective climate mitigation activities and to involve the private sector. Official representatives from Chile, Peru, Ghana and Switzerland, as well as an expert in the area of e-mobility and a representative of the KliK Foundation, reported on progress and key findings from the implementation of Article 6.
